Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is used as a strong base in the manufacture of chemicals and products such as pulp, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents.
In the pulp and paper industry large amounts of sodium hydroxide is both consumed and generated continuously. Sodium hydroxide is also used to clean sewage and drains from fats, food scraps and other organic materials. It is also used for the leaching of oil paint or heavy duty cleaning of soiled floors in garages and workshops.
As a food additive sodium hydroxide has the E-number E 524.
Anhydrous caustic soda is converted into a solid state by an evaporation process in several steps and is available as prills.
Advantages of prills:
• Uniform and optimal size provides good mixing properties. The prill grains are readily soluble and need only slight mixing.
• Prills are hard and unbreakable and therefore do not brake down to dust that reduces moisture absorption.
• Prills are denser than flakes, which allow for optimal use of storage facilities and reduced transport costs.
