Calcium chloride is a common salt that is very hygroscopic and reacts exothermically with water. The product is an active ingredient of dust binding and frozen surfaces and are well suited to use on roads and riding tracks.
Calcium chloride (CaCl2) absorbs moisture from the air and forms a brine that penetrates the wearing course and surrounding dirt particles with a damp film. Since the brine has a higher surface tension and lower vapor pressure than water, moisture stays in the road even at high temperatures and drought.
Heated calcium chloride can be used as a drying agent for gases because the dried salt readily absorbs water vapor. Calcium chloride can also be mixed with cement, which allows molding when temperatures are below zero.
In the food industry calcium chloride is for example used as a acidity regulator (E-number 509). It has a very salty taste and occurs in various sauces and as an electrolyte in sports drinks. In the brewing and dairy industries calcium chloride is used to regulate calcium levels.
Calcium chloride is also available as solution.
